Unwritten Rules of Golf

The Unwritten Rules of Golf (That Definitely Shouldn’t Be Written)

Golf has plenty of official rules — you know, the boring ones about where you can drop a ball or what counts as out-of-bounds. But then there are the real rules. The ones your buddy shouts at you from across the fairway with a beer in one hand and zero credibility in the other. These are the unwritten rules of golf. The ones that make the game what it is — part competition, part comedy show, part therapy session.

So grab your pencil (for writing down a fake score) and let’s dive into the rules that nobody asked for, but we all follow anyway.

1. If You Don’t Pass the Ladies’ Tee Box… Pants Are Optional

And by optional, we mean “mandatory off.” It’s not in the USGA handbook, but every foursome in America knows this law. Mulligan Boy still hasn’t forgiven us for enforcing it.

2. Mulligans Are a God-Given Right

Forget “one per round.” If your group doesn’t let you take at least three per nine, find new friends. This rule also applies to breakfast balls, brunch balls, and “my-contact-lens-fell-out” balls.

3. Silence on the Tee… Except for Trash Talk

You’re not allowed to breathe while someone addresses the ball, but apparently yelling, “Don’t chunk it, Kev!” the second they swing is perfectly acceptable.

4. Beer Counts as a Club

If you can’t decide between a 7-iron and an 8-iron, crack open a cold one and let destiny decide. Just remember, if it’s your swing beer, you have to finish it before you swing again.

5. Lost Ball? Five Minutes… Unless It’s a Pro V1

Let’s be honest, if you lose a Top Flite, you don’t even look. But if that little white dimpled beauty cost $5 a sleeve, you’re crawling through poison ivy like Indiana Jones.

6. The Cart Path Is a Runway

Yes, carts have a speed governor. No, that doesn’t mean we’re not drag racing them down the 14th. Pro tip: extra points if you make your passenger scream.

7. The Ball Is Always In Play If You Can See It

Is it in the creek? Doesn’t matter. Is it embedded in the side of a sand trap like a fossil? Still playable. If you can point to it without binoculars, it’s fair game.

8. Never, Ever Admit You Improved Your Lie

“Oh no, my ball must have rolled here on its own.” Sure, pal. And the club fairy gave you a better angle to the green.

9. The 19th Hole Is Mandatory

Even if you played like a blindfolded wombat, you have to celebrate/commiserate with the group afterward. It’s the only time your scorecard doesn’t matter — because the only thing being tallied is who’s buying the first round.

10. The Score You Tell Your Spouse Is Always Par (or Better)

You didn’t shoot a 106. You shot an “even par, honey!” And that’s the story you’re sticking with — especially if you just spent $600 on a new driver.

These rules may never make it into the official handbook, but let’s face it — without them, golf just wouldn’t be the same.

Let it fly. 🏌️‍♂️
